  9. Overview
  10.  
  11. Open computer networking is no longer the sole domain of universities
  12. and research institutions. Today, governments, schools, public
  13. organizations, commercial enterprises and private individuals are
  14. actively using and supplying information over the global Internet.
  15.  
  16. How will these various network communities cooperate and interact?
  17. How will the academic and research community adapt to the new network
  18. reality?  How will the network and networking tools now available
  19. stand up to the explosion in number of users and amount of information
  20. available?  How will we train novices?  What will we pay for and what
  21. will be for free as the commercialization of the network progresses?
  22. Will we be inundated by advertising over the net?  These are only a few
  23. of the questions facing network service providers and users alike.
  24.  
  25. Building on the success of the previous Network Services Conferences
  26. in Pisa (1992) and Warsaw (1993), NSC'94 will focus on the issue of
  27. providing services to customers, with special attention paid to the
  28. exciting developments in global tools and services. We will address the
  29. impact of the new global tools on service development and support, the
  30. changing function of traditional tools and services (such as archives),
  31. new services (such as multi-media communications), the future role of
  32. the library and the effects of commercialization on networks and network
  33. services. Customer support at all levels, and the role of support in
  34. accessing global services, will also be covered.
  35.  
  36. Talks, tutorials,  demonstrations and  other conference  activities will
  37. address the needs of  the research, academic, educational, governmental,
  38. industrial, and commercial network communities.
  39.  
  40. NSC'94 is being organized by the EARN (European Academic and Research
  41. Network) Association in cooperation with the Internet Society, RARE,
  42. NORDUnet and EUnet.
  43.

  45. Tutorials, Demonstrations and Posters
  46.  
  47. In addition to the presentation of papers, there will be tutorial
  48. sessions on specific network services as part of the regular
  49. conference program. A room will be available for workstations and PCs
  50. to be used for demonstrations throughout the conference.
  51.  
  52. A poster wall will be available to participants for the display of their
  53. posters  and  projects. Terminals with connectivity to the Internet
  54. will be available to delegates.

  59. The Program Committee for NSC'94 is soliciting proposals for papers,
  60. tutorials, demonstrations and posters in all fields related to network
  61. services. Subject areas for presentations include, but are not limited
